Cooking with Phoebe: Edition #3
Junior Phoebe Hyde has always been passionate about food, whether cooking and experimenting with food or watching the Food Network. As someone who daydreams about her next meal, she is here to share all things recipes, food stories, and her favorite new restaurants. In her food column, she hopes to inform and entertain fellow Trevor Students in the mood for a sweet or savory activity, or even those looking to discover a new passion.
Now that the Winter holiday season has come to a close, I wanted to chat with a few peers to hear about what their favorite foods to make during the holidays have been, but before we get into the interviews, I would like to share a little bit about my Holiday cooking experience.
Before COVID, Chanukah was when I would be surrounded by near and far family with enough food to last for days. I would prep homemade matzah ball soup with my Grandmother as we took in the wintery atmosphere around us. We would also make homemade latkes, my Great Grandmother’s brisket, and all of the other small fix-ins. The food connected me to Chanukah and the Jewish traditions my family has created while making time with my Grandmother so special. This year, my family managed not to let COVID stop us from enjoying the food we typically share with our family. That meant that we all cooked separately and drove to drop off different dishes at each other's homes. Then, we met on zoom to enjoy them and each other's company. The savory aroma that filled my house made me feel the same as if my family was still over. The power food holds to bring people together during the Holiday season is magical, even if we can't be physically together.

“My favorite thing to make during the holidays is lemon curd for lemon tarts because it is a tradition in my family that we do every Christmas. We also make the Gramercy Tavern spiced nuts every Christmas, and we make a big batch of them and give them as gifts to people with our Xmas cards - Gramercy Tavern was my parents’ favorite restaurant when they were first dating, and they have been making them every year for Christmas to remember the good times.”

“My favorite thing to make during the holidays is hot chocolate!!! I like to try out different fun hot chocolate mixes, and I love decorating my cup with lots of marshmallows! This is the best drink ever and really gets me in the holiday vibe!”
Next Up : 11th grader, Sunny Barish
“My favorite holiday food is hot cocoa because whenever I go out in the snow to ski, sled, etc., it warms me up, and it makes me feel like it’s really winter. Hot cocoa has always been a winter staple at my house, and it reminds me of Wintery days when I was younger.”
Lastly: 11th grader, Matilde Anacoreta
“Something I like making during the holidays is cookies because the process involves my family, and it is just a very fun and calming experience. My Dad's grandmother has a fantastic recipe that we love to use.
